Welcome to our third tournament spotlight, where each month we will be speaking to one of Scotland's TO's about their event and finding out a little bit about their history and giving you some more information about these amazing events. Up this month we have Granite Bowl led by Phil Cairns (fromherashes) which is hosted in Aberdeen.

When was the tournament first established?

2017

What inspired the creation of the tournament?

The growth of the local Blood Bowl community

How has the event grown or evolved over time?

It started as a two day event which averaged around 20-30 players (which was a good attendance given the smaller number of tournament attendees that there were in those days). Post COVID pandemic it became a one day tournament which attracts 40+ attendees and is now the longest running tournament in Scotland.

What is the typical number of participants in previous years?

Between 40-50 attendees

Who has won the event?

Jayycee (Granite Bowl I - 2017)

GrumpyMaestro (Granite Bowl II - 2018)

the_Joeker (Granite Bowl III - 2019)

fromherashes (Granite Bowl IV - 2022)

Mournival (Granite Bowl V - 2023)

Veldora (Granite Bowl VI - 2024)

Mailljm0404 (Granite Bowl VII - 2025)

Any memorable moments or highlights from past tournaments?

Having the ignominy of winning my own tournament with Goblins...

Has the tournament hosted any high-profile players or teams?

We regularly have members of Team Scotland attending, we have had members of Team England attend as well.

Are there records or statistics associated with the event? Where can these be found?

There are the entries for the tournament in the NAF database and from Granite Bowl IV onwards each tournament has been recorded in Tourplay.

What impact has the tournament had on the local or wider community?

The tournament has really helped to act as a springboard to encourage Aberdeen based players to attend tournaments further afield and ensure that we had an ABBC winner until Granite Bowl VI, the challenge now is to return it to ABBC hands in 2026 at Granite Bowl VIII

Do you have sponsors or partners?

Regular sponsors for Granite Bowl are Hearthforge Games, Docminiature, Cowan Designs and Daemonscape.

Are there any special themes or features at your tournament?

Since 2022 the race of the winning team has been commemorated by a miniature representing that team being the attendees gift in the following year. So far we've had a Goblin Coach, a Chaos Dwarf Sorcerer and a Skink Apothecary. This year's attendees gift will be a Norse themed beer pig (keg token).

What are your future plans for the tournament?

We've always considered moving back to a 2 day tournament but that presents issues logistically and financially so the main focus is maintaining the tournament and growing it to a sustainable level that helps support the local community and the wider Scottish Blood Bowl Community.

Is there anything else participants or spectators should know?

There are still some tickets left for Granite Bowl VIII on 24th October 2026 in Aberdeen
