Destruction Bowl: Sporran Peace

At the start of September Destruction Bowl 5 took place in Irvine with 30 coaches battling it out for the crown. This years winner was Team Scotland's own lively locutor: Sporran. I asked him a few questions about the event in an attempt to glean some tournament tips.

Congratulations on the win! What's the story behind your NAF name?

Chose this gaming name way back around 2001.

How long have you been playing and what are your favourite races?

Tried BB back early 2000's, thought you could blitz or block... the games didn't go past turn 3! Played on the pc/Xbox till gw released 2016 edition then my wife bought me it for Xmas and the rest is history.

Favourite races...2016 Pro Elves, 2020 Orcs/Undead then Amazon at the end. 2025 - Too early to say. I find myself rolling way more risky dice than I ever used to and I see a lot more hero plays. Only starting to get the flow with Humans (Skrorg is a disappointment), but gonna give Goblins a go soon. I want that no skill 1ttd pass, to see what it feels like...because it feels like cheating when it's done to me haha!

For this tournament: what was your decision-making process your team selection?

Humans - I wanted that 1ttd, the only team I've got painted that can do it...till I pick up the Goblin team from JackH. At least if I don't win a tourney with the Gobbos, I might still win the best painted prize 🙊.

Who did you play against, how did you feel the matchups went?

Keithabix - Chaos Renegades - Lord Borak was a pain in the arse, knocked down my ogre so hard that he boneheaded the next 4 turns!

CapnRedBeard - Necro - always tricky against Necro, you never know with sidestep/stand firm. Once I got a wraith off the pitch it eased up. Tough match.

TheBunneh - Elven Union - well...I did promise Connor revenge for smashing me with H'thark some time ago. Human blitzers made mincemeat of the elves.

What were some of the crucial plays (yours and your opponents) that contributed to your results?

I think each game came down to dice at the crucial moments more than anything else.

Probably the difference though is that humans are very flexible, they've always got an out, albeit with slightly worse odds. They can bash but aren't Str4, they have speed and can pass but they aren't Agi2, and they can throw teammate but have bonehead/loner.

So, I'm finding them a bit like having a swiss army knife that has a higher chance of failing.

What advice do you have for coaches looking to go along to this tournament?

The tournament has quality prizes (and delicious soup). I suppose you wouldn't expect anything less from Mark.
