Welcome to our second tournament spotlight, where each month we will be speaking to one of Scotland's TO's about their event and finding out a little bit about their history and giving you some more information about these amazing events. Up this month we have Glasbowl led by Lewis Mullan (LewishM) which is hosted in Glasgow.
When was the tournament first established?
2022
What inspired the creation of the tournament?
Lack of tournaments in Glasgow at the time
How has the event grown or evolved over time?
It has grown in number each year
What is the typical number of participants in previous years?
40-50
Who has won the event?
Amsfeld - 2022
Dooglew - 2023
Lordgarlack - 2024
Mournival - 2025
Any memorable moments or highlights from past tournaments?
Gquail winning the spoon 2 years in row. More than one instance of a weegie player stabbing and killing a high value piece, wardancers killed by goblins come to mind.
Has the tournament hosted any high-profile players or teams?
Regular group of scotlands top coaches are there, several of team scotland every year. This year we have reigning naf champ saltymurcutt travelling up. Several players from Waterbowl make the trip up every year.
Are there records or statistics associated with the event? Where can these be found?
Just on the NAF page for the tournament and the tourplay for the later iterations as well
What impact has the tournament had on the local or wider community?
Glasbowl grew from 30 coaches in a city with no blood bowl scene to attracting 52 last year and Glasgow itself now hosts several tournaments and 2 leagues. Several glasgow coaches attended Glasbowl as their first tournament and gone on to join more events from there. I think it represents a very entry level tournament with just a bit of chaos to offset some of the more serious tournaments in the calendar.
Do you have sponsors or partners?
Several companies have sponsored various iterations of the event, HungryTroll, KR Cases, CounterAttackBases, Black orc down have all contributed prizes in some of the years. Currently we focus on working with the new batch of scottish hobby makers using trophies from Cowan Designs and Gizmo3K (Alan S) as yet unnamed company.
Are there any special themes or features at your tournament?
Yes! Its Glasgow themed, every team gets to nominate a player as a weegie and over each game he stacks up more glasgow themed skills, the core one being he starts with Stab. We offer a most stab cas award every year.
What are your future plans for the tournament?
I believe Glasbowl is in the place it needs to be, it is great if the event continues to expand in size but it is not necessary to run the event. There is no reason to expand to a two day tournament as Glasgow already hosts 4 of these in a year currently. I just hope it continues to entice new players and give them a chance to step into the tournament world while also providing a challenging but less meta dominated tournament for veteran players. Each year we attract a few more coaches from England so my one hope would be to entice players from even further afield or even include coaches from overseas, but as it is a one dayer I know its not totally feasible for most people.
Is there anything else participants or spectators should know?
Glasbowl is and always will be a tournament where a coach of any skill level can come along and have a good days blood bowl, it has just the right amount of chaos to welcome upsets but not so far that a good coach cant work around it or even use it to their advantage on a team they normally wouldn't pick.
Also we give away great goblin themed dice every year and some other goblin goodies to go with them, so if thats your thing come right along.
