Exiles Triumph at Scottish Teams Championships

And Murder Aces hold onto the Scottish Constructors Championship for second year in a row!

With eighty-eight coaches descending on Glasgow University Union for the Scottish Team Championships to battle it out for the title and the coveted Scottish Constructors Championship, for best Scottish League, this weekend was always going to be one hot ticket. The weather in sunny Glasgow over the weekend agreed as temperatures soared as cubes were rolled.

The form guide coming in (see Runners and Riders) suggested The Scottish Exiles, Murder Aces and ABBC Butteries were the top three in-form teams who’d be looking to convert their hopes into glory.

The beautiful Glasgow University Union played host to the Scottish Team Championships

Not all superheros need to wear capes to fly!

However the Butteries were off to an interesting start before round one was drawn as Shriyke, Team Scotland coach, and Keithabix, Team Ireland Captain had to withdraw from the team for last-minute reasons. Fullfatbeard their Captain managed to rustle up JackH on Friday night as a very strong replacement, but couldn’t find a fourth to cover the gap.

However Fullfatbeard needn’t have worried as JackH was ready to don his cape to pilot Shriyke’s Lizards and play a second match simultaneously with the only other team on hand on Saturday morning - Ogres!

Rather than letting opponents down with no game to play for lack of a coach JackH conducted an epic feat of playing two matches a round clocking up ten games over the weekend recording a very impressive 6-1-3! Two of the losses coming in the final round as he faced high quality opposition in BB_Jock, Team Scotland Captain, and Camelchops also in the Scotland Squad for Hungary. (Ed: hat tip to JackH!)

Standings at the end of Day One

As the end of the first day drew to a close after three rounds the top five by and large followed the form guide. Having avoided each other on day one both the Scottish Exiles and Murder Aces the two hot favourites sat astride the top of the pile joint equal on three wins each. This meant they were due for a shootout in round four after breakfast - would this curb their evening revelry?

… Not a chance as both teams as part of a bigger group went round the corner to a local curry house, whose claim to fame is they are the inventors of the famous Tikka Massala in the 1970s. Great food, good company and a few(!) beers meant the STC delivered on its promise of a fun evening on top of a good day of Blood Bowl.

Round Four - Clash of the Titans

Murder Aces, defending Champions versus The Scottish Exiles was a mouthwatering prospect with seven of the eight coaches either having been capped or in the current Scotland Team meant that this could well be a potential title decider and the match-ups were juicy;

  • Board one Team Scotland Captain BB_Jock faced his Vice Captain, Purdindas in a High Elf mirror

  • Board two Camelchops for the Exiles on Necro taking on Gerdleah, who’d beaten world number one, Olivier Du Lac, at UKTC, on Dark Elves

  • Board three had Scotland team mates Loki and Sporran duke it out with Vamps versus Pro-elves

  • Board four saw Sann with Amazons taking on Mournival, Scottish Blood Bowl Committee Tournament Lead with his tricksie Woodies!

The Murder Aces were hoping that the all-elf squad would deliver the wins to carry them to victory. However, Sann got The Exiles off to a quick start to bag the win and put them on the front foot. Not far behind in a tense mirror match Scotland Captain v Vice Captain went to the wire with Jock pulling out the win, thanks to some hot injury dice meant the Exiles were up 2-0 with the round draw secured, regardless.

Over on board three Gerdleah was putting Camelchops under the cosh as he defended the drive and it was looking like it was going to be an important stop. However the slightest of overcommits allowed for Camelchops to swing back once more and be in GFI range to potentially bag a TD… he duly delivered, wiping the sweat from his brow! Holding Gerdleah up just long enough meant Camelchops locked up the draw and the round win whilst Loki and Sporran took it to the wire on the clock resulting in a draw.

Exiles took the round 3 - 1 and with the only team on four wins were very much in the driving seat going into the last round, where a team draw would be enough to lock up the Championship.

We interrupt your viewing to look at the pretty painted teams

Amsfeld, the TO, is a well known and talented painter, being voted as Scotland’s Painter of the Year last year. So a tournament run by his fair hands would not be complete without a Best Painted competition.

Judging commenced at lunch time on day two. Asked about the standard of painting he had to judge, Amsfeld had this to say,

“The standard of painting across the board was excellent. It was obvious there was a lot of effort being put in to get teams finished to a high standard. There were probably three or four teams that could have won best painted on any other day. However the winning team stood out with having a classic paint scheme that was very well executed. Congrats to Goldeneye for his brilliant Chaos Renegades.”

All to play for in the final round

Going into the final round the Exiles were in the driving seat on four wins - eight points, but there were three squads on six points, right behind and still in the hunt for the Championship win including Murder Aces, ABBC Butteries and Awesomest Party People who, like the Aces, had been put to the sword by the Exiles, in round two.

Let’s not forget it wasn’t just the title of the Scottish Team Championship that was up for grabs, but the bragging rights for the Constructor’s title open to the teams fielding coaches from a Scottish League. If the Aces couldn’t win the Championship, then there was a determination to hold onto the Constructor’s to see MKBBL remain top of the pile amongst the Scottish leagues.

The draw for the last round saw three-coach ABBC Butteries with a mountain to climb by taking on the unforgiving Exiles who had only lost one game all weekend up until the last round. The Aces took on the Awesomest Party People knowing they needed the win to stand a chance if the Butteries did overcome the Exiles whilst Awesomest Party People with an eye on Home Nations and UKTC later in the year were no doubt thinking about the points they could collect for the GB Team Championship NAF Super Series.

JackH (Scott Paton) had been working miracles, playing his socks off by beating almost all the coaches he took on two at a time. Unfortunately Jock and Camelchops were not prepared to yield both locking in wins shortly after Sann had beaten the Butteries captain, Fullfatbeard, meaning the Vamp-off between Loki and MarkyMarc would have no impact on where the title was going - although it did end in a draw.

With the path clear the Murder Aces still had the prize of the Constructors title firmly in their sights. The Awesomest Party People were not going to be the roadblock they’d hoped to be as the Aces swept them aside three wins to one to secure runner-up and the Constructors title!

Honorable mentions

Whilst not in the thick of the action at the front of the pack steady progress was made throughout the weekend by the ABBC Rolls who were able to take a last round win and make a grab for third place as the Butteries fell back a little from the final round loss.

Blood and Tears, up from down south, finished a credible fourth to add to their Super Series tally having put in a good performance at Kent Team Championship in March (blog to follow shortly with an update on the Super Series). Then there were the Nibbler’s who’ve been building their reputation as a solid team tournament squad who lost out on fifth to the Butteries on countback.

In shot, Padster, captain of the NIBBlers facing off against Bolter, taking a slender 1-0 victory as the Northern Irish lads end up a credible sixth out of twenty-two

With the awards given out, and the packing up all but done I got the chance to catch-up with Amsfeld and gather his impressions of the weekend he’d just organised,

“Having graduated from a one-day last year to a two-day event in a brand new venue I was nervous how things would work out. I needn’t have worried, it was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. It was fantastic being able to look at the tables as I walked round and see people enjoying themselves. I was really pleased to get the blend right of a fun and competitive tournament. Massive thanks to everyone that came along, helped out and made the STC what it was. Now planning starts for 2026!”
